Significant Cybersecurity Breach
In a significant cybersecurity breach, AT&T has disclosed that hackers have accessed the call and text records of nearly all its cellular network customers, according to a report by Patrick Smith of NBC. This revelation came to light on Friday following an internal investigation by the company.
According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), AT&T discovered in April that hackers had “unlawfully accessed and copied” call logs stored on a third-party cloud platform. The compromised data includes records of calls and texts from approximately May 1 to October 31, 2022, and on January 2, 2023.
While the content of the calls and messages remains secure, and personal customer information was not accessed, the exposed records contain phone numbers. AT&T highlighted the potential risks, noting that customer names could be traced using publicly available tools.
In response to the breach, AT&T has implemented additional cybersecurity measures to close the point of unlawful access. The company assured that affected customers would be notified.
This incident underscores the vast challenges of cybersecurity for large corporations.
