As Over a Million Students Eye Higher Education, Evolving Admissions Rules and Rising Tuition Demand a Fresh Approach

As college application season kicks off, over 1.2 million high school seniors nationwide are entering the process, a pivotal journey for students chasing academic dreams. Many of these applicants are already exploring the early decision path, aiming for a potential admissions boost, but Forbes contributor Kristen Moon cautions that this committed route might constrain students still exploring academic interests and financial realities.

“In the intense world of college applications, students benefit most from crafting adaptable strategies and backup plans for each step along the way,” Moon advises.

The graduating class 2025 faces an altered admissions field marked by policy shifts, campus life changes, and new financing considerations. Admissions staples like affirmative action and legacy status are seeing rollbacks, while artificial intelligence tools increasingly influence the evaluation process. Forbes contributor Scott White highlights various updates, from revised FAFSA forms to cutbacks in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, reshaping how students approach applications.

To succeed, applicants should consider a systematic approach to what many experts describe as a marathon, not a sprint. Forbes contributor Dr. Aviva Legatt suggests a structured seven-step guide to help students organize and manage the often overwhelming application process.

Despite shifts in employer attitudes, Ivy League schools still hold a prestigious place among applicants. However, as Forbes education consultant Christopher Rim notes, admissions at these elite institutions are not as meritocratic as they may seem, with high competition pushing students to seek unique differentiators.

“Exceptional grades and test scores are foundational, but elite colleges look for much more,” Rim states. Harvard, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania received tens of thousands of applications for the 2023-24 school year alone, accepting only a fraction. Rim advises high school freshmen to start cultivating their résumés early with targeted activities and achievements that align with their academic interests and strengths.

Rim also cautions against the blanket application approach to the Ivy League, suggesting that students consider each school’s unique programs, campus culture, and academic strengths. “Focusing energy on applications for all eight Ivy League institutions can often be a poor strategy,” he says, recommending that students curate a balanced list of colleges based on individual fit rather than prestige alone.

With rising tuition and many non-Ivy institutions offering similar educational benefits, Moon emphasizes that students should avoid overly narrowing their focus to elite schools. She also highlights common misconceptions in the application process, such as the belief that choosing an unusual primary will boost admission odds. Moon clarifies that colleges prioritize demonstrated interest and coherence with the student’s profile rather than unconventional choices.

Moon further debunks myths around SAT scores and résumé embellishments, stressing that understanding fact from fiction is crucial in a process often clouded by misinformation. With early deadlines fast approaching, students are encouraged to equip themselves with reliable information and to approach the application journey with a strategic, well-informed mindset
