Strike on Displacement Camp Results in Casualties

The Israeli military stated that the target of the strike was Mohammed Deif, a senior Hamas military commander and the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks. However, Hamas has refuted this claim, asserting that “defenseless civilians” were the victims of this strike and labeling the allegations as “false.”

Scenes of Devastation:

Footage from the aftermath in al-Mawasi shows a scene of horror, with bodies strewn across the streets and tents destroyed. “I cannot describe the magnitude of the tragedy to you,” a resident conveyed to a CNN reporter, highlighting the emotional toll on the community.

Casualties and Injuries:

The attack led to widespread destruction, with the Health Ministry in Gaza confirming at least 90 fatalities initially reported and nearly 300 injuries. Rescue efforts were hampered by the extensive damage, with locals and teams scrambling to save those trapped under the debris. Hospitals like Kuwait and Nasser reported being overwhelmed by the surge in casualties, straining their capacity to respond.

Eyewitness Accounts:

Hammoud, a young boy, recounted his harrowing experience: “I was sitting in the bathroom, and before I heard explosions, the bathroom flew off. The whole area filled with smoke, and the shells began to fall.” Tragically, his brother was killed, and his sister is currently hospitalized. Aida Hamdi, another resident, described the chaos: “We suddenly heard missiles hitting. I was baking bread and started running with my daughter. The dough was mixed with sand. We heard three hits; people around me were martyred.”

Hamas Denies Claims:

In a statement, Hamas denied Israeli assertions that the strike targeted Deif and another leader, Rafe Salama, calling it a “horrific massacre” and labeling the claims of targeting leaders as “false.”

Use of US-Made Munition:

At the scene, CNN identified a Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) tail fin, indicating that it was using a US-manufactured GPS-guided kit. This type of munition can convert “dumb bombs” into precision weapons, raising concerns about the nature of the attack.

Intelligence and Decision-Making:

Israeli officials acted on recent intelligence suggesting an opportunity to target Deif within the last 24 hours—the decision to authorize the strike involved discussions with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and top military officials.

Profile of Mohammed Deif:

Known as El Deif (The Guest), Mohammed Deif is a notorious bomb-maker born in the 1960s and involved in numerous attacks, including a wave of suicide bombings in 1996. He has eluded multiple Israeli assassination attempts by frequently changing locations.

International Criminal Court’s Stance:

In May, the International Criminal Court sought arrest warrants for Deif and other senior Hamas figures for their roles in the October 7 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis.

Ongoing Conflict in Gaza:

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza aims to dismantle Hamas and rescue hostages. Since the conflict began, over 38,000 deaths have been reported.
