Markets Surge as Oil Prices Plunge Following Strait Reopening

Date:

Financial markets rallied sharply Friday after Iran announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments, easing fears of prolonged supply disruptions.

Energy prices saw a dramatic shift, with oil dropping more than 13% in a single session. The sudden decline came after Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, confirmed that the vital waterway would once again allow the free movement of commercial tankers transporting crude النفط from the Persian Gulf to international markets. The move is expected to last through the duration of the current ceasefire.

Wall Street responded with strong gains. The S&P 500 climbed 1.4%, putting it on track for its third consecutive week of solid advances—the longest winning streak since late October. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged by more than 1,000 points, or 2.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.6% in morning trading.

Investors have been encouraged by signs that tensions between Washington and Tehran may not escalate into a broader economic crisis. Since hitting a low point in late March, U.S. equities have climbed more than 12%, fueled largely by optimism that the conflict can be contained.

The reopening of the strait—though potentially temporary—marks the strongest signal yet that global energy flows may stabilize. Lower oil prices could bring relief to consumers facing high gasoline costs while also easing inflationary pressures that have weighed heavily on economies worldwide.

Donald Trump added to the positive sentiment, stating Thursday that the conflict “should be ending pretty soon,” further boosting investor confidence.

Following the announcement, U.S. benchmark crude fell sharply to approximately $79 per barrel, reflecting renewed expectations of steady supply and reduced geopolitical risk.

While uncertainties remain, Friday’s developments provided a powerful reminder of how closely global markets are tied to geopolitical shifts—and how quickly sentiment can change when tensions begin to ease.
