MADRID — At least 68 people were killed and about 100 injured when a high-speed train struck a stationary train south of Madrid, Spanish officials said. Rescue crews continued working at the scene, while service on the high-speed route between Madrid and Andalusia was suspended.
Officials attributed the crash to human error following a computer-system failure. Spain’s transport minister questioned how a train could have continued despite a red signal.
Witnesses described passengers being thrown through the air during the impact and scenes of widespread devastation.
The collision marks Spain’s third major rail crash this year. In January, a collision between two high-speed trains in Córdoba province killed more than 40 people. Days later, a commuter train derailed near Barcelona.
