BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Midtown Times) — A 30-year-old Brooklyn woman was struck and killed by a New York City Department of Sanitation truck Wednesday evening while crossing a busy intersection in Bath Beach, police said.
The victim, identified as Siobhan Lynch, was crossing Bay Parkway at Cropsey Avenue at approximately 6:35 p.m. when the eastbound sanitation truck made a right turn onto Bay Parkway and struck her, according to the NYPD.
Emergency medical workers transported Lynch to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where she was pronounced dead.
The truck’s 41-year-old driver remained at the scene. No arrest had been made as of Thursday morning, and police said the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family of the victim,” Department of Sanitation spokesperson Joshua Goodman said. He added that the agency is cooperating with the police investigation.
Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue have been designated Vision Zero priority corridors because of their high rates of pedestrian injuries. City officials said four people were killed and 26 others seriously injured in crashes along the two corridors between 2021 and 2025.
Earlier this month, the city began work on a safety and bus-priority redesign that includes new pedestrian ramps, median islands, curb extensions and changes intended to reduce dangerous turns.
The fatal collision occurred shortly after sunset and only days before daylight saving time ends, when evening darkness will begin an hour earlier. City officials have warned that pedestrian and cyclist deaths typically increase during the darker fall and winter months.
The investigation is continuing.
