ALBANY — New York Attorney General Letitia James has won a third term, defeating Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy in Tuesday’s election.
James declared victory at a Manhattan gathering, telling supporters that voters had given her a mandate to continue her work. Early results showed her leading Komatireddy, though vote counting was still underway.
The race drew national attention because of James’ ongoing legal battles with President Donald Trump. Trump endorsed Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, as she challenged the incumbent’s record and leadership of the office.
James campaigned on her work enforcing antitrust laws and protecting civil rights. Her victory keeps a prominent Trump critic in the state’s top legal post and gives her another term to pursue cases and oversee investigations involving New York residents and businesses.
The result also shows how the contest became a broader test of the attorney general’s role and her high-profile clashes with the president. New Yorkers chose to keep James in office, while the final vote count will determine the precise margin of her win.
