Suspect in Custody After Shooting Scare at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Date:

A tense and chaotic scene unfolded Saturday night in Washington, D.C., after a shooting incident disrupted the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, prompting security to rush Donald Trump and other high-profile officials out of the venue.

According to a report by NPR, a suspect has been taken into custody following the incident, which occurred inside the Washington Hilton during security screening near the ballroom entrance. Authorities confirmed that both the president and Melania Trump were not injured.

In remarks delivered shortly after the incident, Trump stated that a United States Secret Service agent was struck but protected by a bulletproof vest and is expected to recover. Officials said the suspect was heavily armed, allegedly carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives at the time of the confrontation.

Law enforcement sources indicated the individual is believed to have been a guest at the hotel. The suspect is currently hospitalized for evaluation and faces multiple federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and the use of a firearm during a violent crime. Additional charges are expected, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

Panic Inside the Ballroom

The incident erupted shortly after 8:30 p.m., when what sounded like gunfire sent shockwaves through the crowded ballroom filled with journalists, lawmakers, and administration officials. Guests were seen fleeing as security personnel swiftly moved to evacuate the stage, where Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other dignitaries had been उपस्थित moments earlier.

Video from inside the event captured security shouting warnings such as “stay down” while escorting attendees to safety. Several cabinet members, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., were quickly removed from the area and secured elsewhere in the hotel.

Swift Law Enforcement Response

Trump later praised law enforcement on social media, calling their actions “fast and brave” and confirming that the suspect had been apprehended. He added that while he initially encouraged continuing the event, final decisions would be left to authorities.

Officials also confirmed that multiple senior figures, including Kash Patel, were safely evacuated. Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat and that all cabinet members are accounted for.

A Broader Pattern of Threats

Saturday’s incident adds to a growing list of security threats involving both political figures and members of the press. Trump himself has previously survived assassination attempts, including a 2024 campaign rally shooting in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, journalists have also faced targeted violence, notably during the January 6 Capitol Riot.

The Washington Hilton, the site of the dinner, carries its own history of political violence—it was also the location where Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

Despite the alarming events, no fatalities were reported, and officials continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
