The confrontation occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. outside 2657 Bainbridge Ave., within the 52nd Precinct.

Sources said the man fired at responding officers under circumstances that remain unclear. Police returned fire, striking him twice in the leg.

Emergency medical personnel transported the wounded man to a nearby hospital, where he was expected to survive. The officers were not struck by gunfire but were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Investigators recovered a handgun at the scene, sources said. Authorities have not publicly identified the wounded man or explained what led to the confrontation.
