Wuhan, China – October 12, 2025 — Coco Gauff closed out tennis’s Asian swing with another career-defining moment, defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula in straight sets to claim the 2025 Wuhan Open championship. The world No. 3 triumphed 6–4, 7–5 on Sunday in the WTA 1000 final, overcoming moments of inconsistency on serve to secure her 11th career singles title.
The victory marks Gauff’s second trophy of the year and her first since her Roland-Garros triumph in June. Now heading into the WTA Finals in Riyadh next month, the 21-year-old star is in formidable form and firmly established as America’s top-ranked player.
“I’d like to thank my team—it’s been a great Asian swing,” Gauff said during her victory speech. “JC [Jean-Christophe Faurel, my coach] didn’t want me to come because I had a tough U.S. Open. But I had to prove him wrong. I’m stubborn that way—maybe he knew what he was doing.”
Sunday’s clash was a first-of-its-kind for both players: their debut WTA final matchup and their first meeting of the 2025 season. The pair, who partnered in doubles at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, displayed the chemistry and mutual respect that have defined their partnership on and off the court.
For Pegula, the loss marked her third runner-up finish of the season, but her strong performance in Wuhan officially sealed her qualification for the upcoming WTA Finals. She joins Gauff and Wimbledon and U.S. Open finalist Amanda Anisimova as the three American women competing among the world’s elite.
With another WTA 1000 title in hand and her confidence surging, Coco Gauff heads into the year’s final stretch as a major contender to end 2025 on top of the tennis world.
