A massive fire and explosion at a shipyard on Staten Island left at least 16 people injured Friday afternoon, according to the New York City Fire Department.
Emergency crews responded to the waterfront dock area shortly after 3:30 p.m. following reports that two workers were trapped inside a confined space at the facility. Firefighters arriving on the scene discovered flames burning in the basement section of a metal structure located near the dock area, officials said.
As crews battled the intense blaze, a powerful explosion erupted approximately 50 minutes after firefighters arrived, dramatically escalating the emergency response.
Authorities confirmed that at least 16 individuals suffered injuries during the incident. Among the injured were two firefighters and one civilian who reportedly sustained serious injuries. Additional victims were treated at the scene as emergency personnel continued rescue and suppression operations.
The fire remained active into the evening as firefighters worked to contain the dangerous conditions at the shipyard.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether there were any fatalities connected to the explosion. The exact cause of the fire and subsequent blast remains under investigation.
The incident prompted a significant emergency response on Staten Island, with multiple fire and rescue units deployed to the scene as investigators began examining what may have triggered the explosion.
