CAIRO/JERUSALEM — Israeli forces launched a new wave of heavy airstrikes on Gaza City on Wednesday, ahead of what officials described as a planned ground takeover. According to Gaza’s health ministry, the bombardment killed 123 people in the past 24 hours—the highest daily death toll in a week.

The strikes come amid the nearly two-year war that has devastated the densely populated enclave, home to more than 2 million Palestinians. The conflict has already left tens of thousands dead, destroyed vast swaths of infrastructure, and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents.

The escalation coincided with renewed talks between the militant group Hamas and Egyptian mediators. While details of the discussions remain limited, diplomatic sources have described them as part of ongoing efforts to negotiate cease-fire terms or humanitarian relief.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking on Wednesday, repeated a controversial idea previously endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump—that Palestinians should “simply leave” the territory. The suggestion has been sharply condemned by Palestinian leaders and human rights advocates, who view it as a call for mass displacement.

International organizations continue to warn of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, with aid agencies reporting severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies. As the strikes intensify and civilian casualties mount, prospects for a diplomatic resolution appear increasingly uncertain.
