Munich, Aug. 16, 2025 — Luis Díaz wasted no time making his mark at Bayern Munich, scoring on his first appearance to help secure a 2-1 victory over Stuttgart in the German Supercup on Saturday.
A Dream Start for Díaz
The Colombian winger, who joined Bayern from Liverpool last month in the club’s marquee transfer of the summer, struck in the 77th minute to double the lead after Harry Kane had opened the scoring earlier in the match. Díaz’s decisive finish not only delighted fans but also delivered his new team its first piece of silverware of the season.
Kane Breaks the Deadlock
Bayern’s dominance in the opening stages was rewarded in the 18th minute when Kane, alert to a loose ball in the penalty area, calmly slotted home inside the left post. The early advantage reflected the reigning Bundesliga champion’s control, though Stuttgart remained competitive throughout.
Stuttgart Pushes Back
Nick Woltemade, who has been linked with a possible summer transfer to Bayern, forced Manuel Neuer into a sharp save as Stuttgart pressed for an equalizer. Later, Neuer produced an even more impressive reflex stop to deny Jamie Leweling just minutes before Díaz’s goal.
Leweling, briefly sidelined after a collision with Bayern’s Sacha Boey, returned to head in Stuttgart’s only goal during stoppage time, but it came too late to change the outcome.
Fixture Adjustments and German Cup Action
The Supercup, once a traditional season opener, was again staged on the same weekend as the German Cup’s first round, requiring both Bayern and Stuttgart to delay their cup fixtures. Stuttgart will begin its title defense at Eintracht Braunschweig on August 26, while Bayern faces third-division Wehen Wiesbaden the following day.
Elsewhere in the German Cup, Wolfsburg crushed fifth-tier SV Hemelingen 9-0, while Leipzig had to rally twice before edging fourth-tier SV Sandhausen 4-2, with new signings Ezechiel Banzuzi and Yan Diomande both on target.
Other Bundesliga clubs also advanced comfortably: Heidenheim thrashed Bahlinger SC 5-0, Hoffenheim swept aside Hansa Rostock 4-0, and Freiburg beat Sportfreunde Lotte 2-0.
Hamburger SV, freshly back in the Bundesliga, narrowly avoided an upset against fifth-tier Pirmasens, equalizing late before Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer secured a 2-1 extra-time win. Bochum needed a late comeback to defeat Dynamo Berlin 3-1, while St. Pauli advanced on penalties against Eintracht Norderstedt.
One of the biggest surprises came in Bavaria, where FV Illertissen eliminated Miroslav Klose’s Nuremberg 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw. In other matches, Darmstadt edged Lübeck 2-1, and third-tier Energie Cottbus stunned Hannover 96 with a 1-0 victory.
